A serious health epidemic is unfolding among workers who fabricate and install engineered-stone countertops, signaling alarming risks associated with breathing crystalline silica dust.

According to an initial public health report in California, as many as 592 engineered-stone countertop fabricating workers were identified in states of silicosis between January 2019 and June 2026. That count consists of 31 workers who have died and 65 who are facing lung transplants.
